      "Re: 125th Street Ferry

In Response To: 125th Street Ferry (Brandy)

Brandy, if you're interested in the history of ferries in Edgewater for your school paper, here goes:

In 1658, at the foot of the Palisades south of Fort Lee (now the Edgewater Colony) Etienne Burdette, a Huguenot merchant, operated sloops and a ferry to New York (landing at about 152nd Street). In later years, the area where Burdette lived became known as Fort Lee, Tillietudlem, much later as Pleasant Valley, and finally as Edgewater. A stage line ran from there to Hackensack by way of Leonia. Local lore has it that a Bourdette/Burdett rowed George Washington across the Hudson during the Revolutionary War. Many Bourdettes are buried in Edgewater's Historic Cemetery.

In 1832, the Fort Lee and New York Steamboat Company was formed and a ferry ran to 22nd Street, Spring Street, and Canal Street in Manhattan making way landings in New Jersey at Edgewater, Bull's Ferry, Guttenberg, and Weehawken. Ships on this line included the Edwin, Thomas E. Hulse, Fort Lee, Pleasant Valley, and Shadyside.

In later years, the principal ferry line to Manhattan was the Edgewater Ferry to 125th Street, known familiarly as the 125th Street Ferry. The line was chartered to the Riverside and Fort Lee Ferry, from 1888-1943. Service started in 1894.

In 1900, it was acquired by the newly organized New Jersey & Hudson River Railway and Ferry Company. The line connected with the Broadway IRT subway, near its Manhattan terminal. (The Day Line and Night Line steamers stopped at an adjoining pier and an Iron Steamboat Company operated service to Coney Island until 1932). There was also a cross-town trolley car on 125th Street, connecting with the New York Central and New Haven Railroad stations.

In 1911, the ferry and electric railways were taken over by the Public Service Railways, a division of the Public Service Electric & Gas Company-who operated under the original charter granted to the Riverside and Fort Lee Ferry. In 1943, Public Service sold the ferry line, and the Electric Ferry Company operated the line until December 16, 1950.

Note: Facts above taken from the book listed below and other sources. See title for further information.

Railroad Ferries of the Hudson, by Raymond J. Baxter and Arthur G. Adams. (Fordham University Press, 1999).

Hope this helps. Ruth Paci, Chair, Edgewater Cultural and Historical Committee.
