      Military Services Held for John Holt Monday Afternoon

      John W. Holt, age 46, manager of the aid for the aged department in Adams County, passed away Saturday afternoon at the Bethesda Hospital in Cincinnati after three days illness, having been stricken Thursday noon.

      Mr. Holt was well known here having spent his early life in Adams County and later was superintendent of the Springboro schools for a period of fifteen years. He was a graduate of the local high school.

      He suffered serious injuries in 1939 in an automobile accident and was confined to the hospital for quite a while. Left in a crippled condition, Mr. Holt steadily improved his condition by exercises until he was able to walk with the assistance of a cane.

      As a hobby, Mr. Holt appeared before numerous organizations in the county as a magician and also was a very forceful speaker.

      He was a member of the medical corps in the U.S. Navy in World War I and later an active member of the American Legion post at Winchester. He also was a member of the West Union Masonic Order and the Methodist Church where he was teacher of the Co-ed class.

      Surviving are his widow Mrs. Alma Clark Holt and a daughter, Miss Nola Jane at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar V. Holt of West Union, and two brothers, Esten of Columbus and Erman of Marion, Ohio.

      Military funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at the West Union Methodist Church, Rev. W. E. Mills in charge. Burial was made in the Winchester Cemetery under the direction of William Lafferty.

      Mrs. Byrdie Gayman of 131 W. McCreight Avenue died in City Hospital at 4:10 p.m. Friday. She had been seriously ill for several weeks.

      Mrs. Gayman came to Springfield 32 years ago to become matron of the Knights of Pythias Children's Home. She was the widow of L. E. Gayman, a teacher at Schaefer Junior High School who died in 1957.

      She was a member of the First Baptist Church and taught the Philathea Sunday School class for many years. She was also president of the Clark County W.C.T.U.

      Survivors include a son, Vaughn of Dubuque, Iowa; three grandsons; a sister, Miss Mae Moore of Springfield, and a sister, Mrs. Mattie Jones, in Columbus.

      Her body was taken to Richards Memorial Home, where friends may call after 7 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Dr. Edgar Drummel of First Baptist Church will conduct last rites at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.
